The Role of Campus Sport in Student Wellbeing

Being a new college student can be stressful and uncertain. Recently, CSMRE faculty affiliates Hyun-Woo Lee and Minjung Kim joined with a colleague to examine whether sport could help in the acclimation process. They surveyed 304 colleges students. Results showed that participation in or watching sports did not directly influence their wellbeing. Those experiences did, however, related to the students’ adjustment to college life and their overall satisfaction with their college. These factors, in turn, positively link with wellbeing. The findings show the important role of sport — both participating in and watching — plays for college students.
