Research Focusing on the LGBTQ+ Community in Sport

In a recent study, Sally Shaw and CSMRE faculty affiliate, George Cunningham, conducted a scoping study to explore the research in sport focusing on the LGBTQ+ community. The researchers analyzed 260 articles (narrowed down from 1160 in the initial search). Most of the articles were published in gender studies, sport studies, or sociology of sport journals. They also grouped the studies into 7 broad categories: athlete experiences and behaviors; conceptual overviews; legal and regulatory issues; management and advocacy; marketing, communications, and consumer behavior; prejudice and discrimination; and sport managers, coaches, and parents. Overall, the authors concluded that more research is needed to understand better how members of the LGBTQ+ community engage in sport and sport organizations.
