Caregiver Involvement in Communication Interventions
In a recent study, CSMRE faculty affiliate Jay Ganz and colleagues examined caregiver involvement in communication interventions among people with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and intellectual/developmental disabilities (ISS). Caregivers, including family members, play a key role in helping people with ASD develop communication skills. However, cultural barriers and language barriers might limit the support culturally diverse families receive. To examine this topic further, the authors conducted a systematic literature review. They found that (a) caregiver involvement improves communications skills among people with ASD and IDD; and (b) these improvements are made possible when the families culturally and linguistically appropriate support.
